Four Jobs I’ve Had (as a teenager):
Paper girl – Awesome job. My route was inside an 18 story apartment building of lonely blue-hairs. They loved me and tipped me crazy money…
Beckers clerk – I was fired within a couple months and the local MP’s son got my job… fucking politics. He went to my school too so that was unbearably embarrassing.
Taco Bell bitch I made it two weeks before I quit that racket. I think the breaking point was when a customer complained after finding an orthodontic apparatus in the food… disgusting. That and the fact that I wasn’t allowed to take the time to wash my hands between cleaning dishes and being called to the line to prepare food. Sick. This is an example of that beautiful idealism my parents were determined to quash. I remember coming home all defeated and trying to explain these real conflicts to my mother and there was always this layer of judgement clouding her eyes. I hated that. I will believe my kid when they choose to quit a job in order to do the right thing…
Telemarketer The guy that ran this shop was such a burnout loser. We sold portrait packages and after awhile I started faking the calls. I was on an hourly wage plus commission so I didn’t really care. Looking back I realise they probably had one of those systems where they could listen in on the call… I got fired a week before Christmas. Nice.
