OK – this is gross! Geez Louise!! Another reason to lay off the fast food.

Girl’s Science Project May Make You Rethink That Drink Order

Benito Middle School student Jasmine Roberts examined the amount of bacteria in ice served at fast food restaurants.

Her project won the science fair at the New Tampa school, and she hopes to win a top prize at the Hillsborough County Regional Science and Engineering Fair, which starts Tuesday.

The 12-year-old compared the ice used in the drinks with the water from toilet bowls in the same restaurants. Jasmine said she found the results startling.

“I thought there might be a little bacteria in the ice, but I never expected it to be this much,” she said. “And I never thought the toilet water would be cleaner.”

Her discovery: Seventy percent of the time, the ice had more bacteria than the toilet water.

Of the bacteria found in the ice, three out of the five restaurants tested positive for fecal coliform or E. coli, organisms that come from the feces of warm-blooded animals.

The article goes on to interview local health officials about Jasmine’s results and their implications. We have to consider that yes, there are acceptable levels for certain types of bacteria but it’s zero-tolerance for E. coli. Just say no to that bad boy.

    Therer is a perfectly good reason for this, and it’s the same reason you don’t drink the water in the toilet: the amount of chemicals that fast food places put into the toilet system is so toxic that nothing can live in them. They clean the floors the same way (McDonalds has one of the highest sanitation ratings in the industry).

    Ordinary tap water, on the other hand, has little more than chlorine to kill bacteria, which gets most of the harmful ones but still leaves it teeming with the little buggers.

    The real question is not quantity, but type.

    E. coli also gets an undeservedly bad rap: without it, we die. Everyday you move millions of them out of your body, them having helped digest your food for you. A few non-human friendly strains give us food poisoning but it is once more really a matter of numbers.

    Long live e. coli! 😉

    Thanks MrHappy… but it’s still indicative of a contamination somewhere. Any coliform in drinking water is not good.

    From a Coliform Bacteria fact sheet:

    “E. coli is a sub-group of the fecal coliform group. Most E. coli are harmless and are found in great quantities in the intestines of people and warm-blooded animals. Some strains, however, may cause illness. The presence of E. coli in a drinking water sample almost always indicates recent fecal contamination – meaning that there is a greater risk that pathogens are present.

    A Note about E. coli: E. coli outbreaks receive much media coverage. Most outbreaks have been related to food contamination, caused by a specific strain of E. coli known as E. coli O157:H7. When a drinking water sample is reported as “E. coli present” it does not mean that this specific strain is present and in fact, it is probably not present. However, it does indicate recent fecal contamination. Boiling, or treating contaminated drinking water with a disinfectant destroys all forms of E. coli, including O157:H7.”

    Impressively gross. I am having visions of dirty water pipes and how I always order water… hmmm.

    Pee is sterile (in a healthy person anyway.) Hmm, pee is cleaner than tap water. Isn’t there a sect of health food-fanatics that drink their own pee?

    Lol – it may be that pee is sterile in that it contains no bacteria, but urine is the waste product of the body, the stuff it doesn’t want or can’t use anymore. I’m no expert but it doesn’t seem like a good idea to then put that back in…..
