The Nestlé Corporation, the world’s largest food manufacturer, has successfully secured a patent on genetically modified coffee.
I can hardly contain myself.
They say their biotech coffee has a higher level of solubility in water, which increases flavor and caffeine levels per cup.
Excellent, more caffeine. Maybe they could add a little nicotine in there too…
Nestlé is also in the process of patenting genetically manipulated yogurt bacteria and genetically modified cocoa.
They’d patent breastfeeding if they could.
Nestlé promotes genetically engineered foods while claiming, “the Fair Trade approach is not a solution.”
With pure profits driving your decisions, of course not. This, from the same company who would like nothing more than to monetize (there’s that creepy word again) the world’s water supply.

I’ve read that Nestlé’s CEO offers some pretty choice bullshit to this effect in the documentary We Feed The World – which I hope to see soon. It’s not surprising, they have the most to gain being they’re also the world’s numero uno supplier of water. Mix in some of that nice baby formula and you have the perfect cocktail to control consumption, from the cradle to the grave. Starts to smack eerily of Big Brother, “he who controls the food…”
Speaking of water and food, I heard an inspiring story on the CBC yesterday about a UN endorsed, Canadian water company called “Earth Water International“.
“Earth Water is a company conceived entirely for one purpose. It is Earth Water International’s mandate to use 100% of its net profits to fund water aid programs in the places that need it most.
We have invented a new type of corporation. Our corporation is one that does not pillage the developing world to improve its bottom line, because bottom line is to save the lives of people in the most desperate of situations.”
From what I gathered from the CBC interview with CEO Kori Chilibeck, this is the first time a company has been endorsed by the UN.

BUT guess what? Even though they’re growing and doing well, they’re experiencing some difficulty getting appropriate space in stores because the top dogs (Coca-Cola, Nestlé, Pepsi etc) control or buy the shelf space. No big surprise there.
Kori says, based on their own market research, Earth Water is 2-3x more likely to be purchased by a consumer when placed in proper context, ie: on the water shelf next to Dasani or Evian. No doubt.
It’s really simple. People want choice. People want to buy responsible goods.
This is a good news story! Share it and look/ask for Earth Water in your local shops. This could be the new business model of the future.
